I know that most of you here are hardcore fans of the boys , and I love 'em too (err, their music I mean ), but although they've definitely influenced me (esp. Tommy as a guitarist), they're not really my all-time favourite group . That "destinction" would probably go to Opeth, and I think I'd also put Dream Theater and maybe Justice-era Metallica ahead of them in my book. Mental Vortex is certainly one of my all-time favourite metal albums though. So, anyone else here has similar views?

Coroner are up there with the best of the best, but perhaps not my all-time favourites. All time fave band= Black Sabbath also love Testament, and Coroner maybe as much? It's one of those things that depend on the day. It's good to see you mention Opeth, I think they're great & spawned something radically different a few years ago. I think they're struggling to remain as fantastic as they were, but 'My Arms Your Hearse', 'Still Life' and 'Blackwater Park' are very special indeed. Also, Candlemass would normally be in my top twenty, but having heard their new album they have leaped right up into my top 5. It is amazing!! I also love Manowar (oops, sorry!), I just think they're a great metal band. ;D Emperor & Arcturus are worth a mention too. As are Laibach and Death Angel (Act III is perfect), Memento Mori, The Organization & Therion. Metal Church, Armored Saint and Savatage too. Of the '80s Noise signings I always had a fondness for Deathrow! There are more current bands that are also doing fabulous stuff at the moment (mainly from Sweden & Finland), but IMHO it takes being around for a while to be elevated to true great status. So I'll add Grand Magus & Turisas to the list after they've done a few more albums.

Coroner are up there with the best of the best, but perhaps not my all-time favourites. They're definitely mine. A band like Brutality is heavier than Coroner, but they reused a bunch of guitar riffs over and over in a lot of songs; Coroner had a much better variety, especially with only ONE guitarist; Brutality had five over the years (since they kept on getting new members in the band). Also, Candlemass would normally be in my top twenty, but having heard their new album they have leaped right up into my top 5. It is amazing!! Damn, that depresses me, I really wanna hear that ;D I also love Manowar (oops, sorry!), I just think they're a great metal band. ;D No biggie, they've been around forever, and even though I don't know much about them, I've heard the quality of their material hasn't really suffered too much over the years. How about when Messiah left? ;D Therion. Of the '80s Noise signings I always had a fondness for Deathrow! Yeah, big surprises there ;D So I'll add Grand Magus & Turisas to the list after they've done a few more albums. Hmmm, hadn't heard of Turisas, what're they like?

Turisas are Viking True Folk Metal Lunatics! Kind of Skyclad meets Manowar with some extra Viking thrown in. They're great! As for Memento Mori, yep, got all four of their albums, and I even like La Danse Macabre. It reminds me of Dejavoodoo by Hexenhaus, which is another Mike Wead project that was great!! As for Therion, I met Christofer Johnsson & Kristian Niemann last November. They are cool guys, very friendly. There was a power cut 4 songs before the end of the show and they had to finish the gig early! But they were happy to chat. Chris is a big fan of Celtic Frost, but he knew plenty about Coroner too. He's a big fan of music from that era.

Chris and Tom G Fischer were supposed to link up on a future project, but it never happened. Chris and Therion are big fans and took the basis of CF to another plateau.
Coroner is not my favorite, but the music is so lasting and interesting all these years later. Definitely up there.
My favorite goes to Evergrey and their Recreation Day album. Threshold is another, as is the later Testament stuff. Opeth is just plain awesome, as it Pain of Salvation, but not the latest one from them.
Can I forget to mention the awesome Celtic Frost?

Turisas are Viking True Folk Metal Lunatics! Kind of Skyclad meets Manowar with some extra Viking thrown in. They're great! Someone like The Grimoire of Exhalted Deeds would probably call bands like that "gay", but whenever I see reviews of groups like that (Ragnarak [U. K.], Skyclad, etc.), they're always raves... As for Therion, I met Christofer Johnsson & Kristian Niemann last November. They are cool guys, very friendly. Chris is a big fan of Celtic Frost, but he knew plenty about Coroner too. Coroner my favourite band....?? I will say yes. There are other bands and albums that I love, such as Megadeth(Rust in peace),The Almighty(Soul destruction,....),W.A.S.P.,Kreator,but Coroner kept their integrity until the end and had a perfect evolution. They are one of these bands(so few of them!!)who never released a bad album. I also liked the fact that over the years the line up remained the same and they all worked together to create their songs. Fuck,do I miss them!!

I also liked the fact that over the years the line up remained the same and they all worked together to create their songs. Yeah, especially when they didn't always agree, they just moved on: in an interview I sent in (the Metal Maniacs one), when they were looking for one last song to fill up space for Mental Vortex, Tommy would suggest a cover song, but Ron would hate it, or vice versa. But they eventually settled on "I Want You" when someone left the album in the studio one day. So that was cool.

Coronor is definately in my top three. I've also been a fan since I saw the "Masked Jackal" vid back in the late 80s. And thanks to the metal station Z-Rock that was around in the early 90s, I got to hear some of their stuff on the radio at the time. I bought everything I ran across ever since. I about creamed when I ran across death cult MP3s. Would love to be able to buy the CD. would love to get my hands on the "Unreleased" I was reading about.
My other top 3 consist of Mercyful Fate and Black Sabbath.
I've been into Metal for a while now and there's a lot of new bands I like, Mastodon, Enochian-Crescent, Dew-Scented, to name a few, but none, I repeat none compare to Corner. Coroner was truly ground-breaking and underrated. I truly miss them on the scene.

Ever since Grin was released it has been my favorite "heavy" album. That is until I recently discovered Dillinger Escape Plan and their latest album "Miss Machine".
Both Grin and Miss Machine are the closest things to perfect heavy music I have ever heard, and no matter how many times I listen to them I will never tire of them. That is because every time I hear them I hear something I have not noticed before. Despite being musically very different, they share depth of sound, diversity of style, sheer inventiveness and absolute artistic conviction.
I listen to a wide variety of music, but I tend to be very selective about what I buy. I like to buy music that I will never become bored with. I enjoy seeking out music that sounds different from anything else. My motto is always keep an open mind, but don't commit yourself to anything unless you are totally convinced.
Trust me, listen to Miss Machine and you will know what I know. It is difficult music and takes some time to sink in, but your patience will be greatly rewarded. (I saw Dillinger play live 6 months ago and I think my neck is permanently damaged)

Definitely in the top ten, which would be: Overkill, Kreator, Voivod, Coroner, Sodom, Vader, Napalm Death, Pestilence, Sadus, Dark Angel... runners up would be Carcass, Trouble, Holy Moses, Cathedral and Bolt Thrower

Bolt Thrower and Trouble, very cool! Especially since I saw the latter in concert once.
