definitely GRIN. perfect in all its nuances. Paralized, Mesmerized is an absolute masterpiece ex-aequo with the unreleased songs in CORONER... 'shifter' and 'the favorite game', above all (although 'gliding' and 'golden cashmere sleeper' ain't bad at all). second, MENTAL VORTEX. third, PUNISHMENT FOR DECADENCE. fourth: all the rest. what's impressive about Coroner is the constant evolution in all their discography. I still have to find another band with the same talent in songwriting and the ability to push the boundaries in each one of their releases.

Without a doubt GRIN is their crowning achievement. Not quite perfect but damn close to it (I've never heard a perfect album yet, period).
Reasons thus: Creative and original songwriting, clearly their best work. Full warm sound, with lots of separation and air: you can actually hear the drums breathe! (the crash cymbals in Serpent give me goosebumps everytime!: simple but effective) Great atmospherics as always with Coroner that suit the songs and enhance their overall mood. (I find a lot of atmos by other bands is there as filler or just for the sake of it; boring!!!) Flawless and passionate musicianship, they were so together and intuitive as a band but also LOOSE . An awesome, understated and unusual blues feel to many of the songs that I think is quite uncommon in metal bands; very gutsy. The only album that contains songs where they really sound like a 3-piece (see Caveat) This album is so good that I never tire of hearing it (and believe me, that's rare!) There is so much nuance and subtlety to discover in Grin that it just doesn't get boring. Plus it's HEAVY AS FUCK, and personally I find their slower stuff much heavier! (Try Winter "Into Darkness" and you'll see what I mean, they were THE heaviest band ever)
Although sadly the album didn't seem to pay off in commercial terms for the band, I believe it stands today as a supreme work of ART. Coroner were clearly very courageous in their artistic ambitions and committed to producing work of a consistently high standard.
Other albums in order of preference: No More Color (Nice-but-rough sound, great feel, just great. Also the first Coroner album I bought, so a little sentimental I spose) Tied for third place: Mental Vortex (some great songs but production is too clean and leaves me a bit cold) and Coroner (bit of a hodge-podge mix of songs but the newest tracks were mostly excellent) An lastly I have to agree with Tommy, I can't really listen to the first two albums either. They're ok if you're really into old school stuff generally, but they sound very dated today and don't really stand up next to their later works (in my humble opinion, but I know some of you guys would probably shoot me for saying so).

Gotta go with Grin - really shows what they were capable of, how they just kept evolving and getting better and better.

No more color is is by far the best speed/thrash metal recording hands down, ever. I have been listening to "heavy" music for over 20 years and this is the #1 disc in all of the cd players i own. Coroner is the most underrrated band of the 90's and the thought of garbage "metal" groups being heaped around this trio of musical geniuses sickens me. No more color is a thing of beauty and contains in my opinion the greatest songs of the decade.

Grin is more than my favorite Coroner album, it's my favorite metal album. It has stood the test of time so well. An absolute masterpiece.

Funny how so many people on here say Grin, yet it sold the least number out of all their albums (I think. Oh well, at least that's being made up for it now, all these years later)

Yeah it was well ahead of it's time. I remember when it came out, a lot of my friends didn't like it because it was so different.
Does anyone know if it's been re-issued at all? I can't find it in any stores here in Melbourne Australia. My old original copy is still fine, but i'd love to buy a couple more so I can have a back up, and for friends who I've converted into Coroner freaks....

You can get it at www.cdnow.com: www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000008N5K/qid=1137989415/sr=1-7/ref=sr_1_7/002-6059159-7005656?v=glance&s=musicFunny thing is, when you bring up their name, they've got some misinformation there, saying that one of their cds is "No More Color (Live)". For several seconds, I was going "wtf?!" But the listing's the exact same as the official release, and none of the reviews said anything about it being live...weird...and it made me do a double take ;D My old original copy is still fine, but i'd love to buy a couple more so I can have a back up, and for friends who I've converted into Coroner freaks.... Ha ha, I know what you mean, I've BLOWN AWAY buddies of mine as well

Cheers for the link, it's a shame it's so pricey though.... When the hell are they gonna re-issue it? I can still find all their albums in stores except for Grin & self titled. Tis a crime I tells ya.....
