Hi! Does anyone know where did they took that picture from? Is it theirs or is it a famous painting or something like that? The reason I'm asking this is because the (awesome) swedish band Defleshed also used this skeleton for their cd. Here are the two covers (hope it will work, I'm new to this forum):

o yeah I heared that this album used to have a different cover and the label just decided to change it (but I wasn't sure which one's the original)... Which means that if it was changed after '96 they just took it from Defleshed! That's interesting..

FuneralFog, I think it was changed from the beginning, in 1988, I remember seeing ads in a few metal mags back then but when the album came out the sleeve was totally different... so I really don't know if the originally intended cover art was ever published, if someone has this though, that must be some kind of a fukkin collector!!!

That here discussed 'Punishment...' Cover is just found one the CD version, at least I´m quite sure about it, or has anyone ever seen an LP version with that artwork???
Because... The LP has the original (much much better!) artwork, "Front Cover: "Porte De L`Enfer" by Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) Artmuseum Zurich" It´s a photo of a big giant sculpture or better a couple of sculptures!
Sorry, I can´t actually get hold of a scan anywhere on the net... Maybe I should do one, to get it published on the site!?

I have that vynil with original cover and it looks great! It's a pic of Dante's Inferno sculpture or smth like that i'm really interested what was the original cover?! cause the vynil cover says "US Printed" - so may be it was just-for-US cover?

I've got the vinyl version with the original cover too. Mine's a UK edition, so it isn't specific to the US. I got the CD version some time later (early 90's?) and was surprised to see the lesser quality skeleton cover.
Note that the original (featuring the sculpture) has the Coroner dark strip down the side containing the band logo, as on all the other main releases.
I think I recall that it was changed on the CD due to permission issues over the use of the photo of the sculpture... but I may be making it up! I think I read that somewhere in the early 90's!

This has all been news to me, about the cover change...I'll be interested to see it for the first time in my life! Don't understand why people have ragged on that "silly skeleton playing a violin"--I always thought it was fine--but now I'm psyched to seeing what the original was! Oh, and Sirius, I just got an e-mail from Carole yesterday; I thought she hadn't been on in weeks, since I usually see her on here, but she's actually on a daily basis, she's just behind in things, and since I sent in stuff, people have been following up with tons more! So your scan will eventually see the light of day...

Hey, Witchfynde, I hope you liked the scan I sent over. HELL YEAH! ;D ...it is a better looking cover, don't you think? Definitely! Now I see why the skeleton playing the violin is considered "silly" ;D Could be worse, though: I don't know which Overkill album was their first, but it actually *wasn't* their first: their "real" first album came out by some company called Azra (I think) Records (hopefully a loooooooooong dead outfit), which Overkill invested $2,500 (US) in art that never made it onto the cover. After a month, Azra said they weren't pressing any more copies of the album (think they made less than 100) because it wasn't selling, and gave the band a check for fifty bucks!

Hi, Actually, as it was said, the first cover of Puinshement for Decadence wasn't the actual, the Label thought this Picture of a statue was such "intellectual" for metalheads! So the band was asked to change it... Nowadays, I know this first cover was pressed only in Lp (Vinyl), about the new one, I can be able to say who drew it (but I have this one in shirt and it's very nice !!! lol) I found if photo of this original cover on e-bay, if you want too see it, aske to be mailed
