I live in the UK, home to: Black Sabbath Judas Priest Anathema The Meads Of Asphodel Skyclad WITCHFYNDER G but apart from these bands, the UK mostly sucks. So after careful consideration I'd like to nominate Sweden. The reasons (in no particular order): Therion The Provenance (ROCK!!) Spiritual Beggars Opeth Grand Magus Lost Horizon Krux Candlemass Bloodbath Arch Enemy Enslaved The Awesome Machine Wolf Entombed Bathory Memento Mori Hexenhaus Hail to Sweden!! It may be over-hyped at times, but it is the true current king of all that is Metal. And I can't ignore the US: Armored Saint Testament Savatage Metal Church Meliah Rage Masters Of Reality Manowar Agent Steel Monster Magnet Iced Earth Holy Terror Anthrax White Zombie While Heaven Wept Megadeth Slayer Metallica (I'm one of those who will only go up to the Black Album!) ...and the best Black Metal album in the world is far from Norwegian, it's the totally wicked Mesopotamian stylings of Israeli/US masters Melechesh!! ...so what does everyone else out there think?! ;D

I live in the UK, home to: Black Sabbath Judas Priest Anathema The Meads Of Asphodel Skyclad WITCHFYNDER G but apart from these bands, the UK mostly sucks. You've also got: Witchfynde Bal-Sagoth Bolt Thrower Angel Witch Iron Maiden (I think?) But yeah, the UK's metal scene has been pretty dead for years though...wonder what the deal is? So after careful consideration I'd like to nominate Sweden. Yeah, well duh The reasons (in no particular order): Therion Candlemass Memento Mori Yeah buddy!! Also Crypt of Kerberos, although they only did one e. p. and one album, but the latter was VERY excellent (can't say about the e. p. though, I don't have it). And I can't ignore the US: Weird, most people do, including myself, even though I LIVE here! ;D Testament Savatage Manowar Iced Earth Anthrax Megadeth Slayer Metallica (I'm one of those who will only go up to the Black Album!) Yep, plus Metallica's current one...heard they went back to their old style. Iced Earth is from here? But then, I don't know much about them. Not that they had the most fantastic guitarists in the genre or anything, but I'd like to also toss in Mordred (one of the few U. S. bands on the early Noise roster), due to four out of their five albums being good (my opinion, don't have their last one), plus you have to give them credit for being one of the earliest bands to combine heavy metal with funk. ...so what does everyone else out there think?! ;D Germany's had some good bands too, like Scanner, Deathrow (;D ), Destruction (certain albums though), Running Wild (can't say for sure, but they've been around FOREVER), and probably more I'm forgetting (probably forgetting other U. S. bands too; probably add to this later...).

Yep, plus Metallica's current one...heard they went back to their old style. Man, they're fantastic live, I've seen 'em a few times over the years & they always deliver, but all that recent stuff sucks. St. Anger too. Unlistenable production. Not that they had the most fantastic guitarists in the genre or anything, but I'd like to also toss in Mordred ...I've got 'Fools Game' & 'In This Life' on vinyl, and if memory serves me correctly there was a track on FG possibly called 'The Artist'? Anyway, whatever it was called it was mental! Fantastic song, loads of energy! Germany's had some good bands too, like Scanner, Deathrow (;D ), Destruction (certain albums though), Running Wild ..yeh, how about Die Krupps, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Suidakra and Rammstein, too!? Fair play. How about Finland, as an underdog? they've got: Spiritus Mortis (happy doom!! ) Children Of Bodom (crazy fantastic guitars! ;D) Finntroll (true folk metal of the purest trollish order!! ) Nightwish Omnium Gatherum Battlelore Reverend Bizarre (the slowest band in the universe, surely!! - in an entirely good way!) Velcra Tarot Wolverine Stratovarius ...they're all a bit mad in their own way, too. In a very positive fashion, of course. Finnish metal gives me the feeling that it just does not care what anyone thinks!! OK, Sweden was too obvious, I've changed my mind to Finland. Hail to Finland!!

Man, they're fantastic live, I've seen 'em a few times over the years & they always deliver, but all that recent stuff sucks. St. Anger too. Unlistenable production. I couldn't BELIEVE the god-awful snare sound when I heard a song or two of that on the radio ...I've got 'Fools Game' & 'In This Life' on vinyl, and if memory serves me correctly there was a track on FG possibly called 'The Artist'? Anyway, whatever it was called it was mental! Fantastic song, loads of energy! Yeah, that was a great song...is that the only one of theirs that you have? I've got all of them except for their last album (The Next Room, with a different singer, I think), and they were all good. They grew up a lot from the second album on, as they sounded so young with the back-up yelling from the debut overpowering the main vocals! ;D Anyway, thought of a couple more: Rage (for Germany) and Brutality for the U. S...they weren't original at all, but they put out three powerful, quality albums!

You forgot to add the great SOILWORK to the Swedish list! And, yeah, I agree, Sweden wins the title by far!

I agree with FinnLand being the underdog...they dont put out quite as many bands as Norway and the current reigning king of metal, Sweden, but they have put out some damn good bands. My favorite being the Finnish Folk Black Metal band, FinnTroll.
Quick question though...I have recently found this black metal band called Ensiferum...they remind me a lot of FinnTroll...are they from Finland as well? If anyone knows, help me out, thanks!
One more thing...to help simplify this thread and I hope everyone agrees with me, the Scandinavian countries puts out the best metal! (Norway, Sweden, FinnLand) ;D

You forgot to add the great SOILWORK to the Swedish list! To forget Hypocrisy is also a shame.

There are so many, just a couple of minute's thinking leads to more names.. For instance from Finland I forgot Turisas and Moonsorrow. Both are total class!

Its faar from dead - you just need to know where to look in the underground! There are plenty small young bands playing metal all over the place - and they are getting bigger and better. (im not trying to spam here - I love coroner!!!) The UK metal festival Bloodstock is a prime example of things on the rise here - started in '01 with 700 people then expanded 50 % every year and this year there is going to be an open air festival! www.bloodstock.uk.comas for the underground bands, just check out my friends band Evile as a prime example of a young band playing pure thrash! www.evile.co.uk

Its faar from dead - you just need to know where to look in the underground! I can relate, since I live in Houston, which, at a glance, it seems like there's nothing to do here, which there's plenty, you just have to look for it! (Not that I'm defending this city though, as I hate it and can't wait to move ) (im not trying to spam here - I love coroner!!!) How can this be spam when it's in the Other Metal Bands forum? The UK metal festival Bloodstock is a prime example of things on the rise here - started in '01 with 700 people then expanded 50 % every year and this year there is going to be an open air festival! www.bloodstock.uk.comOh yeah, I've heard of Bloodstock. The UK HAS had a fair amount of open air festivals over the years, since the late 80s at least, as far as I know of.

I would say Germany from far... i prefer to drive 5h to go to see a concert in Germany than to go for the same bands at 1h from my hometown in France in general (and it was confirmed often enough when i did both...).
Different reasons, other than the fact they have great bands, especially in thrash metal, but in general, they have the "spirit", in France i'd say there is often in the crowd a good part of teenagers going in their almsot only show of the year, and wanting absolutely war with everybody to be the nearest or to just be "brutal metal" (you know what i mean, the kind of guy pushing during Metallica and screaming "yes so cool they play Master of Puppet!"), and another part not moving at all, looking almost bored. It's not general of course, but to do A LOT of concerts it's what i feel often. In Germany, i'm used to see a whole venue in communion with the stage and bands, rocking but not annoying, mostly (when we don't talk about Wacken for example) you can move inside the crowd to go wherever you want to (i remember a Flotsam and Jetsam show in Oberhausen where after 10 minutes i was going in front directly without problem for example, and it was full), and mostly people have a real metal culture. Next to this, a lot of dates for a lot of bands from everywhere, and so many cool fest of all sizes... Germany is just a great metal country for me.

Yeah Marky had addressed that years ago in a Hard 'n Heavy video about the "bored" part, and that people go more "crazy" here in the States and such. Just a bit of a difference between cultures I guess!
