Anyone here got an original tape of 'The Unknown' from back in '96? I've never seen one 'in the wild' and wondered if someone could confirm that it has a yellow and black cover. There's a very expensive one on Discogs but that has a black and white cover and I'm a bit suspicious it might just be a photocopy rather than an original so don't want to make an offer on it if it isn't genuine...

Yep,I've got one,I bought it on the first show of the Farewell Tour back in January 1996. I can confirm it's a black and YELLOW cover,in fact it looks very muck like a photocopy. If the cover of the one you're looking at is black and white then be careful,it might be a bootleg but double check. In any case it does look like a photocopy. Send me the link and I'll let you know what I think. and obviously it will be expensive as it it even harder to find than the original Death Cult demo

I just had a look on Discogs,it looks exactly like the one I have but it does also look black and white....If I was in your shoes,I'd send the seller a message asking whether it really is black and white or if the scan is playing tricks and making it look that way....

Aha! Thank you for confirming that. Certainly all the pics I've seen on the internet have been yellow and black but I didn't know if there were also pale blue ones as well like the bootleg cd version and then I saw this:- www.discogs.com/marketplace?release_id=4196522&ev=rbThe guy selling it is also the one who has submitted the pic and the listing description: www.discogs.com/Coroner-The-Unknown-Rare-And-Unreleased/release/4196522I REALLY want one of the genuine tapes but that is a lot of money to risk on a potential fake.. Thing is though, if it is a fake, why not just fake a yellow and black cover? It would have fooled me!!

I've just thought - does the tape itself have proper printed labels? I've asked the seller if their copy has so maybe that would help distinguish a genuine one as tape labels are harder to copy than inserts..

I also wanted to buy that Unknown tape on Discogs but I always hesitated because of that horrible price. 100 € for a cassette?! Also I don't like the quality of tape that much. You always hear some noise - audio on Cd is always better.
Still a worth purchase for sure. I'd love the have that album aswell.

It is a hell of a lot but I was hoping that he might take a lower offer as it hasn't sold.. I'd want it more to have such a rare tape than to listen to it really - I still haven't gotten around to printing up the double cd of this that I downloaded years ago and I haven't even opened the lp. I listen to everything digitally these days but it would still be a very cool item to have. I even bought one of these tapes today even thouugh it is a bootleg, just because it looks such a cool item to have, but admitted the price isn't in the same league www.discogs.com/Coroner-Coroner/release/5306611

Seen this farewell tape for months online, for me it' clearly a fake. I'm always careful when I buy in Russia or Greece, lot of real fans there, but a lot of scams too.
If you tell the seller about the yellow color, it won't be too hard for him to photocopy it again on yellow paper and tell you it isn't a fake.
The best I think is to see te tape itself, but once again, it's amazing the quality of copies today. I got some bootlegs from King Diamond and Mercyful Fate several times looking EXACTLY like the originals (same goes for Coroners CDs on ebay from Russia for cheap prices), the only difference was the back cover was still straight, never seen a crystal case ever until it was sent to me.
Personally, even it would be an original (and I seriously doubt), 100€ is way too much, especially now there is a LP version. I am a collector too, but it's still too much I think to just own the thing.

Thanks very much for the offer Thomas, but the seller has got back to me and said that the tape is a TDK90 with no labels so I've no intention of taking it any further!!

@ Thrashos : It is scary how good Russian fakes now are ,and they even fake stuff that you wouldn't think would be worth the trouble ( I do a Sabbat website and there are fakes even of the third Sabbat album which is worth chuff-all sithean.com/sabbat/?page_id=2246 ) What will happen in a couple of years when all the Russian fakes of Grin have worn themselves into cases and are then resold? Apparently to only way to spot the difference is the type of font used in the matrix numbers, but unless you have two side-by-side it's almost impossible to tell.

Yeah those russian bootlegs are sometimes tricky. I also own a few of them. The Grin copy I had was also a bootleg but I realized that unfortunately far too late. I sold it back to Greece and picked up the original copy of Grin at a german Amazon shop.
I can't imagine to listen only digital though I uploaded all my rare Death and Thrash stuff on my computer. Listen to all the original albums still - It needs to get listened the old way!
