...with your music collection? (Couldn't fit the whole title from another forum I put this up on [Part 1 was in the "Other heavy metal bands" forum.]) Dunno what the median age of people here is (I'm in my 30s myself), but I assume that since most of us are grown up (except for an ex-friend's ex-wife who pulled this b. s. on me, but that was about 10 years ago, plus she was the dumbest, most immature person I had ever met), I was just wondering what kind of stuff you would pull out to shut some bonehead up when he stereotyped you into only listening to metal...or, if you just feel like sharing what other things reside in your music collection; either one! various different rock (or not) Psychedlic (sp?) Furs U2 The Cars Soda Stereo (Spanish rock, got it years before anyone else got into it/had ever heard of Ricky Martin, Shakira, etc., et al) Katey Sagal (Peg Bundy from Married...with Children's album, and she's got another one coming out soon, if it's not out already) Basia (cabaret-type singer...good-looking and a good singer, sure, but boring as sh*t music, actually) R. E. M. Big Country Imani Copolla (sp? She sings, she raps, she plays fiddle! Great, varied, funny, different cd!) "Weird" Al Yankovic new wave (I guess) Platinum Blonde (a few of their tunes here and there are metal, actually) Men Without Hats classical mostly movie soundtracks, like RoboCop Vanessa-Mae (combines classical with pop/rock rhythms) rap (believe it or not) Eazy-E blues (only one!) Stevie Ray Vaughan new age Ottmar Leibert (sp? Flameco guitar player) Gaelic Storm (they were the "steerage band" in the Titanic movie) Cusco Kate Price Hevia--inventor of the electronic bagpipes...killer debut!!! (second one is real generic I heard, and he's already coming out with a live album, so I guess he's already running out of ideas...sad to hear ) Deuter Mars Lasar bands I don't know what bleepin' category they go under The Victims Family (metal/hardcore? They've got a fat bass sound, anyway) Primus (speaking of... ) Love in Reverse (somewhat metal mixed with Pink Floyd and lord knows what else...excellent group, Johnny Z [who made Anthrax huge] was their manager, too bad he couldn't do much with them) King (anyone see this guy's/group's videos in the 80s? [No, not THE king, as in Elvis, nor King Diamond] Kind of alternative rock, I guess...just wondering if anyone knew anything about them, I'm just curious as far as their heritage, they looked indian or Arabian or something [except for the one white guy in the group]) dark ambient Mortiis/Vond/Cintecele Diavolui (sp? It's all the same guy) Swartalf Desiderii Marginis a recording of some Giagan choir (don't know if that's even spelled right, it's an offshoot of Spanish) singles of various kinds Kraftwurk, The Little River Band, Moby, Madonna (don't look at me like that, she did a good remake [complete with new lyrics from herself] of "American Pie", ok?), Lit, Smashing Pumpkins, Pretty Maids (gotta have a few metal singles anyway!), Concrete Blonde, A Flock of Seagulls, Milli Vanilli (I hate to admit...I just liked their mix of rap and singing, even though I didn't know who was doing it at the time!), The Power Station, Paul Simon, Qkumba Zoo, Shakesphere's Sister (more new wave/synthesizer stuff on those two), Ghetto Mafia, XZIbit (combines rap with piano and classical...those last two are rap)...and all kinds of other stuff And yourself?

Well, you've got a lot of different things! I'm afraid I would have to be stereotyped though, as I really only listen to metal. Different kinds of metal/hard rock (that's the beauty of it ), but still in the same musical family. I've had my shameful moments (disco, if you can believe it... ) but that was when I was very young, so it doesn't count ;D Mmh, actually, as I "forced" my mom to listen to a lot of metal over the years, she also forced me to listen to her stuff. So I'm able to somewhat appreciate certain things like blues-rock and jazz-rock, and some other "funky" things. Don't have any in my collection though, unless she stuffed them in there.

Well, you've got a lot of different things! Yep...makes up for the lack of quantity though, as I got my first cd player in 1989, but I don't even have 300 cds yet (there's been several periods of non-work, so when I don't work, I don't buy). I have a fair amount of tapes and albums (less than 50 of each, though), so I was born at pretty much the right time, as far as music formats go, I think! Still need at least one Indian cd, though (Indian music kicks ass!)... I'm afraid I would have to be stereotyped though, as I really only listen to metal. Ah, you'll grow out of that, wink wink (to everyone else reading, that was in regards to another thread ) I've had my shameful moments (disco, if you can believe it... ) but that was when I was very young, so it doesn't count ;D Heh, yeah, I know what you mean (hides incriminating tapes behind back). Don't have any in my collection though, unless she stuffed them in there. So just stuff some Dying Fetus and Vomitory into *her* collection then! (Oops, don't know how *that* stuff got in there, mom!)

(Indian music kicks ass!)... Does it?? I thought it was: "Indian music makes your ears bleed with despair" Haha! Of course I will! I would if I could! But, at this time, I would have to surreptitiously upload it into her collection, I'm afraid, as there's an ocean between us.

Does it?? I thought it was: "Indian music makes your ears bleed with despair" Humph...no, that's in regards to a lot of foreign people saying that American music is boring, since they throw in all kinds of styles, rather than one style per song, and everything being verse verse verse, chorus, verse verse verse, chorus, maybe a bridge, then repeat chorus to fade (granted, that's in regards to *popular* music, and NOT metal, which would scare the pants off the people who say that...muHAHHAHAHAH!). And the female singers are AMAZING. Some indian music does only have a couple of things going on, but for the most part they combine pop, techno, rock, classical, traditional indian stuff, and all kinds of things I don't even have adjectives for...sometimes all within the same song! I've even heard some rap and heavy metal guitar solos creep in here and there in the last few years...and I'm just *waiting* for the first ever death metal band to come out of India...should be any day now! (And then they'll instantly get banned from their own country, I'll bet ) I would if I could! But, at this time, I would have to surreptitiously upload it into her collection, I'm afraid, as there's an ocean between us. Oh, whoopsie...that does make it kinda difficult ;D

I'm mostly into metal - saw Black Sabbath on TV when I was 9, got hooked instantly! Other stuff that you can find in my collection: Electric Light Orchestra - 70's fully orchestrated pop! (the Therion of their day?! ) The theme music to Dr Zhivago The theme music to Omen II The Boomtown Rats Mortiis The Carpenters 300,000vk - mad techno dance stuff Carmina Burana The Planets Suite ...plus others. ...but best of all, crazy Slovenian indescribables: Laibach- they've been around since the late 70's & have done loads of weird and wonderful electronic mad stuff. I don't normally like too many cover versions, but this band gets away with it by making them SO unique. Mad career points are: 'Sympathy for the Devil' - SIX different versions of the same Stones classic song 'N.A.T.O.' - loads of cover versions themed around war. But really BIZARRE re-workings! Anyone fancy a kinda techno version of 'Mars' from the Planets Suite? Or maybe a version of 'In The Year 2525' sung by Dracula himself? 'Kapital' - just plain crazy! The king of all their albums though, is the only one that featured Metal leanings, 1997's 'Jesus Christ Superstars'. With Satan on lead vocals, sweet choirs for backing singers, mid-tempo dance rythyms and evil axe work they served up a genuine classic. ;D Gotta say that for a non-metal band, it's up there in my top ten of Metal albums that I've ever heard! ...and this album freaks everyone out!! Respect to crazy Slovenians, I say!

Heh, got you down here to this section! ;D Electric Light Orchestra - 70's fully orchestrated pop! (the Therion of their day?! ) Hey, I remember those guys! ;D So what's Bob Geldof (sp?) up to nowadays? Do you have his Fata Morgana album? I heard it was really excellent; until it gets a re-release (Mortiis claims all of his side projects are dead and will never come back again, but you know how those artists are ), it was the only side project of his I couldn't get my hands on. Who's she? Or is it a he, or a them? Classical space music? ...but best of all, crazy Slovenian indescribables: Laibach- they've been around since the late 70's & have done loads of weird and wonderful electronic mad stuff. I don't normally like too many cover versions, but this band gets away with it by making them SO unique. Think I've heard of them... Mad career points are: 'Sympathy for the Devil' - SIX different versions of the same Stones classic song How the hell could they DO six different versions?! ;D 'N.A.T.O.' - loads of cover versions themed around war. But really BIZARRE re-workings! Anyone fancy a kinda techno version of 'Mars' from the Planets Suite? Or maybe a version of 'In The Year 2525' sung by Dracula himself? What the hell are you talking about?! ;D The king of all their albums though, is the only one that featured Metal leanings, 1997's 'Jesus Christ Superstars'. Yeah, I'll bet! Some unique stuff in your collection, that's for sure!

Heh, got you down here to this section! ;D Hey man, i's dark down here!! So what's Bob Geldof (sp?) up to nowadays? Hah! gotta say I've got no idea, perhaps it's best we don't know! ;D Do you have his Fata Morgana album? Nah, I'm afraid not - I'm a Mortiis novice, I only have his 'The Smell of Rain' album, & I'm currently toying with the idea of getting his new album 'The Grudge'. What d'ya reckon? I've currently got a fair shopping list that includes the new Megadeth, the new Rammstein, plus Mortiis and a few others. Top of the list is 'Battle Metal' by Finnish band Turisas. Anyway, there's no way I can get 'em all! Who's she? Or is it a he, or a them? If you heard it you'd recognise it, it's a piece of Opera composed by Carl Orff, and the first part of it 'Fortuna' gets used everywhere as big horror/drama opera. Actually, Therion covered it as a bonus track on 'Deggial' Witchfynde thinks: Goddammit man, will you stop with the damn Therion talk!!! Bang on! What the hell are you talking about?! ;D ;D Techno cover versions of 'Mars' from the aforementioned Classical space music! You need to hear the accent of the lead vocalist on the other song to fully appreciate the Dracula reference. Anyway, my non-metal collection is not nearly so wide and varied as yours, but it is good to have a bit of variety. I've been toying with the idea of posting up an answer to your 'Metal' version of this thread, but it's gonna take careful planning to mention all who are worthy...

Hey man, i's dark down here!! Well, most metal IS dark...what, it's dark now because we're NOT talking about metal? Nah, I'm afraid not - I'm a Mortiis novice, I only have his 'The Smell of Rain' album, & I'm currently toying with the idea of getting his new album 'The Grudge'. What d'ya reckon? BTW, I'm getting gaps in the quotes here from when I first replied (those are missing), case you're wondering...but then, that happens sometimes with the asshats at Proboards...so anyway... Actually, I've got all of Mortiis' side projects (except for Fata Morgana), but the only one I have from him is Fodt Til a Heske (sp?), which is decent, although it's only two pieces, each being over 25 minutes long...that and The Stargate is good, can't really say anything else of the stuff by him...I liked The Dark River and Selvmore from Vond, and Cintecele Diavolui's The Devil's Songs is good, sounding a bit like The Immortal game music for the SNES and Sega Genesis. I've currently got a fair shopping list that includes the new Megadeth, the new Rammstein, plus Mortiis and a few others. Top of the list is 'Battle Metal' by Finnish band Turisas. Anyway, there's no way I can get 'em all! Yeah, I know what you mean, I'm WAY behind in getting cds that I want: no work, no buying the cds for me...oh well. Actually, Therion covered it as a bonus track on 'Deggial' Witchfynde thinks: Goddammit man, will you stop with the damn Therion talk!!! Ha ha! That's ok, they've earned it, so much to the point that Johannson, in an interview I read (not the one that I have, but in another magazine), was getting three nosebleeds a day, he was working so hard...damn... (in regards to that space album you've got) I think I heard a knock-off of that before...you know, there's a bunch of classical knock-offs, like Symphonic Star Trek, which a friend of mine got me for my birthday one year...BIG black eye against the Trek universe, since it wasn't official, yet they still (somehow) roped Leonard Nemoy into narratating the introduction piece...hee hee!! ;D Techno cover versions of 'Mars' from the aforementioned Classical space music! You need to hear the accent of the lead vocalist on the other song to fully appreciate the Dracula reference. Oh, ok...was wondering what you meant ;D Anyway, my non-metal collection is not nearly so wide and varied as yours, but it is good to have a bit of variety. Yeah, but I don't have many cds (got a cd player in '88 or '89), yet I don't even have 300 cds yet, but I make up for it by having a wildly diverse collection though! I've been toying with the idea of posting up an answer to your 'Metal' version of this thread, but it's gonna take careful planning to mention all who are worthy... Just note that if the "artists" involved wear wigs and yell "we're not worthy!" while on their knees while you wonder out loud if they should be considered "metal", then they're not...

Some of the albums you wouldn't think you'd find in my collection judging by how I look (kind of "typical" metalhead): More or less complete discographies of these great artists - King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Mahavishnu Orchestra and Porcupine Tree. ("Complete discography" means LP's and live albums, not all singles, obscure limited editions, and Japanese and Iraq digi-packs ) Several albums by these artists: Mogwai The Flower Kings Bark Psychosis Tortoise Tori Amos Much classical music: Chopin Beethoven Mahler Debussy Ravel Rachmaninov Stravinsky Sibelius Pärt Liszt Haydn..... and others So I have no problem putting some non-metallic music when I'm having guests but for the "normal people" most of it is too weird anyway.

Nu-MetalAmerican Head Charge GrungeAlice in Chains Godsmack (post grunge) RockRush The White Stripes Skid Row Quiet Riot Blind Melon Collective Soul Deep Purple Monster Magnet Industrial something-or-otherRammstein Nine Inch Nails That sorta covers the non metal section of my collection...I'll think of more later

Thought I'd bump up this ancient (by internet standards) thread by giving a link to a video I did of just a small overview of my music collection (meant to do this for a while now). Yes, there's a brief metal section. Yes, Coroner gets a mention. Yes, I'll eventually do another, all-metal one, and hope that it doesn't get muted since some company doesn't want their metal band's stuff up on YouTube in this manner. Granted, though, it's a full 10 minutes long, just as a warning...doesn't seem like it, since each artist only gets a few seconds, maybe a minute (at most) each, but I have a bit of a hatred when someone sends me a link and expects me to watch a video without telling me it's like eight (*#!ing minutes long first (I hardly watch anything over five as it is). Other than that, have fun!
