I'm not a musician, but I've always been fascinated by Tommy's guitar sounds. Like on Mental Vortex, he makes the guitar riffs sound like they are going backwards, if you get what I'm saying. A technologically advanced sound, with some weird manipulation.
How hard is this crap to do, other than the solos? How crazy are the solos?
I can only hope that Tommy will chime in on this because I'm interested in how he put together those sounds, along with the executions. Two sides, both very inspired.

Yeah, he's axework is fascinating, both technically and melodically. Even early on, his solos were so far ahead of say, Kirk Hammet's wanking, and on mental vortex, every solo owns! I have no idea what technology and effects he used ( though apparently he paid a great deal of attention to that) cause I know as much about that stuff as Bush about world peace. I've transcribed some stuff off MV (intended for Powertabs) recently, but now I cant enter it into the program cause it's all f*cked up for some reason and doesnt play the notes correctly. Whatever...

dont know about the solos, I havnt attempted them but the riffs do indeed go chromatically forwards and backwards which most guitarists dont do, (can only think of jeff Waters from Annihilator to have made things sound weird in the same way)

"Fascinating" is an excellent word for it. Just to listen to how he gets all those notes and overall sounds together is amazing.

I couldn't agree more! Tommy is a guitar god!! And I think it's a shame we haven't been able to see more wonderful examples of his work recently. A talent like that should be shared with us mere mortals! ;D
Anyone else think he was criminally under-used in Kreator? Anyone know why that was?

Anyone else think he was criminally under-used in Kreator? Anyone know why that was? By the time he arrived in Kreator they had already written all the music for that album, so there was very little space, if any, for his writing or even soloing. By the time of the next album things had gotten a bit better, he could do some leads (which were the best moments on "Endorama", imho). But he was "under-used" indeed. Firstly, I guess Kreator wanted to follow more modern tendencies of that time and that means no soloing an no metallic guitar wizardry. Secondly, Kreator was nevar really "his band", I guess. He has stated himself, that in a live situation he was 100% together with the band, but writing-wise had different things in mind. So that might explain something. And yes - Tommy is a great guitarist indeed. If I was asked for my influences/ favorite players I would surely name him together with Trey Azagthoth, Chuck Schuldiner, Robert Fripp and Steve Vai.

What makes Tommy's music so great is that he can play extremely fast but he doesn't just rely on that, and even more,I think he's one of these few guitarists who don't just stick scales together and as fast as possible, but has that incredible feeling for the music. Tommy is not a guitar god....he is THE guitar God!!

Tommy is a very big influence for me.I´m playing Guitar since 5 Years, and i´m listening to Coroner since 4 Years, so he took the most place in my own songwriting. The Fast slidings and skills on A and D String, the classical leads usw.I can play some Coroner Songs like Reborn through Hate, Coma, Totentanz, Masked Jackal and Golden Cashmere Sleeper Part 1, but my own songs are really lend next to Tommy´s style.I dont want to copy him, i just want to give his infulence in my own sound.

Tommy is a-fucking-mazing on guitar. He is hands down the best guitarist in my book. His style is unmatchable, and his riffs are unheard of, even still today.

As a working musician myself i´ve been a huge fan of Tommy´s guitar-work for years now. The thing that thrills me the most is the large amount of tought behind he´s playing. A perfect example of this is the solo in "The favorite game". chromatic runs, pinched harmonics and smooth whammy slides all perfectly done. He´s more a thinking man´s guitarist then anything else.
..Or the layer chord just before the solo in "Read my scars"
e----0 B----6 G----7 D----7 A----0 E----x ......Brilliant

Tommys playing style is Neoclassical influenced and very structured in the riffing dept with a lot of diminshed patterns, string skipping, double stops and scale runs..I love it how both Ron and Tommy play unison riffs and some of that is COMPLICATED shit! Both guys are very underated and techniqally perfect...They have been an influence on my playing since R.I.P came out on cassette!
