I know Carole did...several times. So did I...once.
This was back in November, 1991. The show was in a real crappy area of town; I was afraid my car's windows would be smashed upon coming back out later. A local Metallica clone band called Fortress and then Agony Column opened up; this was going to be a late one, unfortunately (HATE it when there's a lot of bands and you've gotta wait for the one that you want to see the most!).
When me and a friend went in, the road crew was testing out the equipment, which I wasn't really paying attention at first, since I was busy securing MY section of the place: right in front of the stage, right side.
The the so-called "road crew" went into "Divine Step". Cool, they know the material.
Then I saw it was RON doing the vocals.
Holy CRAP, that's THEM!! I yelled to my friend. It was Tommy and Marky as well, and after stopping after a few measures, they were about to leave when my friend yelled "hey Ron! Could you sign this?", which he promised "later".
Then when Fortress started up (or wait, was that Witness? Forgot again...), they weren't bad, but being Metallica clones, they weren't anything new. Agony Column, unfortunately, played THIRTEEN BLEEPIN' SONGS...WAY too long, if you ask me! They seemed ok, but I didn't really care too much for them, but I'd rather be more open-minded and get into them when I'm not impatiently waiting for them to get the hell off the stage, and have a better-sounding, controlled gig (i. e. like my room, but minus a few dozen people), rather than here. One guy there would later say it wasn't the right gig for them, since the audience wasn't able to get their sense of humor, but WHAT sense of humor? In their song "Sex and Cars", the vocalist said whenever I turn on my tv, all I see are sex and cars, which I didn't think was funny, it's TRUE!
So, after too long a wait, Coroner got on, and only played a couple of songs from albums 1-2, which pissed me off a bit (this was when they had four albums out). But it was a good show though, although Ron's vocals were WAY too far in the background and drowned out. They sounded good during the soundcheck, but then someone decided to crank it up even *louder*, which didn't help, if you ask me, as the sound got worse. Oh well.
One thing that was funny was that, during their interview segment on a Hard 'n Heavy video I have, Ron's smoking a cigarette. Wes, my friend (whom I got into Coroner), waved his pack of cigarettes in Ron's face during a song, but Ron didn't budge. Well, the stage was so small I literally just climbed up on the stage and walked backstage to get them to autograph their first cd when they were done, as there was pretty much no security at that show, and the first thing Ron asked Wes was "could I have one of those cigarettes now?" ;D
One thing that I was surprised at was Tommy and Marky just signing my inside R. I. P. sleeve and leaving without saying a word (gee, thanks!), especially since Marky did all of the talking in the video; feh. But a couple of tall, death metal Swiss guys who had just played a concert...yeah, I ain't going to piss them off either. But Ron stayed and talked to me and Wes (maybe it was because both of us were taller than him, or he was just cool?)...maybe because we cornered his short self (just kiddin' guys ).
Wes made a d**k of himself, but meanwhile Ron was surprised at some of the things I said, like about how I mentioned them and Candlemass playing a concert together (which, for a while there, was a more modernized Black Sabbath, but with an opera singer...those guys were AWESOME!!), as Ron said increduously "you were THERE?" No, I had just read about it (it was in some other country, but it was cool to hear him say that in his Swiss accent ). Wes, unfortunately, had to learn the hard way NOT to think that your musical tastes are the exact same as everyone else's: in order to try to look cool with rappin' with Ron, he mentioned King Diamond (Wes' favorite artist). "Ahhhh, I HATE King Diamond!" said Ron (probably because of the Satanic bent he had in his lyrics for a while, which Coroner never did, or maybe because of the stories about the evil grandma were too ridiculous that, at times, King wanted us to believe were true or not...burn!! ).
There was some product around back then that Bronson Pinchot of the show Perfect Strangers promoted, which is somewhat equivalent to the internet of today: it came with it's own keyboard and monitor and you could call up through a phone line to leave messages on their boards and play games and all; I forgot what it was called. Anyway, Wes put up a review of the concert on there, and in it he talked about the moment that "Ron broke my heart!" upon finding out what he thought about King Diamond. Ha ha!
Anyway, at a future record convention, I bought another copy of R. I. P. and stored the original, autographed one in my fireproof safe, where it still lingers today. Even though it wasn't economically feasible, it was good timing that I just quit my job that night of the concert, since I didn't get home until 1-2 a. m., but since I was so riled up I didn't fall asleep until 7! Very fond memories, there...
So, anyone else on here see them?
