Something struck me the other day: Tommy's guitar-students!
If anyone knows what he's up to these days, it should be them. But there are some problems: - Who are they? - Why don't they spread the word, like on this m-board? - How can we get in contact with them?
Just a thought...

One reason may be because his students don't speak English (he probably teaches in the Zurich area.) Also, Swiss people are not necessarily very Internet-minded. Another reason might be because they don't even know who he is. I remember the Coroner guys to be incredibly humble, and totally unsuspecting of how we, fans, think of them. When I was still living in Switzerland and followed them on the Grin Tour, I was lucky enough to be able to ask Ron for an autograph between two songs. Tommy and Ron looked at each other as if they were surprised anybody would want an autograph of them!

Isn't it a bit ironic: a bunch of students takes lessons from one of the best guitar-players in the world, and they have no idea who their talking to! It must have been (especially) cool catching them on the Grin tour, Grin being one of their best albums and all! ;D Do you remember the set list?

Isn't it a bit ironic: a bunch of students takes lessons from one of the best guitar-players in the world, and they have no idea who their talking to! Yeah, it's really insane! But I wouldn't be surprised if that was the way it actually is... Following them on the Grin Tour was one of my most memorable concerts memory! They played in small clubs as the main act and, one time, it was even just a small country outdoor thing with drunk country people sitting at wooden tables... (couldn't believe it!) I got the autograph from the last show I attented, in Bulle, FR, Switzerland. I can't remember the exact set list, although I'm sure I had written it down at the time... They started each show with the tribal theme of Dream Path, accompanied by green lights and smoke, with nobody on stage... Then the lights went off as the music faded and there they were! I do remember that, out of the Grin album, they at least played Serpent Moves, Status Still Thinking, Grin, Paralyzed Mesmerized, and also the total insanity in the club when they finally played Internal Conflicts! Each of Tommy's solos were as perfect as on the recorded albums -- he's totally amazing and he doesn't even know it!

God! Sounds amazing... Tommy's kick-ass soloing can be heard on the Unreleased Tracks CD 2 with their gig.... Did he reply anything to you Carole, by the way?

Hi all, I'm new to the board, so hello!
Let me start with reviving an old thread...
My name is Luki, I live in Zurich. I used to have guitar lessons with Tommy Vetterli in the mid nineties.
I can confirm that Tommy was extreme humble, and that I really had no Idea who I was talking to. I mean, I knew he was brilliant and that he used to play in a band, but that was it (I was about fourteen at the time, playing an Epi Sheraton II, perfect match, eh?).
My interests in Music were mostly blues and rock at the time, I remember him teaching me to play "Message in a bottle" and some Steve Vai or Satriani solo (well, just a part of it...). I only had lessons with him for half a year, then I quit (just the lessons, not the playing!)
It took a while for me to realize who my teacher was, and I really hate myself for not learning more from him now... oh well, today I try to learn some of his songs (rhytm only...) on my own...
He was the only teacher I know who didn't bother me with learning to read music, but to play... I know some other people who were students of his, maybe you like this Band: Dying in Motion, Emo-Core band from Zurich, their guitarist had lessons with Tommy too...

Wow! You had guitar lessons from the man himself. Very cool. I have one question for you.
As a musician myself, I think it's important to learn how to read music, but I'll get into the reason why another time. I'm curious if the reason he didn't teach you was because he wanted to teach you to play first, or was it because he doesn't read music himself. I'm just wondering as I don't know if he can read music or not.
Oh, and welcome to the board!

Well, Tommy wrote the music with Ron for Coroner, so I will assume that he does, in addition to being an instructor, which usually requires that ability.
Marky may or may not know how to read and write music, as many drummers don't, but it is entirely possible, since he does know his way around synthesizers and keys, if I'm not mistaken.

Hi Boogieluke!! Welcome on his board!! How lucky were you to be taught by my favourite guitarist ever.... I don't know if Tommy can read music but the first time I talked to him(1993 in Lyon,France),he told me that he'd been playing the guitar for 15 years.... Regardless wether they can read or write music, they jst are amazing, and the perfect match. I hope they'll eventually get back together....the music industry is in great need of quality!!!!
