Since this is the place for musician talk, I guess I might as well share my story as well. I'll be 31 in July, played guitar since I was about 8, bass since I was 14, and a little drums and keyboards thrown in, although not as proficient as the other two. I've been in various bands since I was 15, from original metal to covers to prog stuff.
Anyway, about a month ago I saw an ad a drummer put up on one of our local musician classified web sites looking to do, of all things, a Rush tribute band. Now, as many of you know, their music isn't the easiest to play, but if you can do it, people will take notice. So I called Jeff, the drummer, and asked him what he wanted to do. As I had hoped, he wanted to do the whole range of material, not just the old stuff. We talked for about 10 minutes, and about two weeks later we got together for the first time with myself on guitar and a bass player. For a first run through with everyone, it actually wasn't too bad. After the first rehearsal, the bass player told us he liked the gig, but didn't have the time to commit to it.
As luck would have it, however, another bass player, whose current band opened up for my old band one time, called and said he was interested in checking us out. So last night he came over and we jammed. Did I mentioned this guy RIPS UP the bass, and plays keyboards and bass pedals too? Just what we needed!!! He's checking out some Van Halen tribute band tonight, but it doesn't look like they're really together, so I'd say 95% chance he's with us.
Here's our set list for now:
Anthem The Trees Limelight YYZ Red Barchetta A Passage To Bangkok Freewill Distant Early Warning Animate 2112 Overture/The Temples Of Syrinx
I'm not sure how far this thing will go, but at least it'll be fun to play these songs for a while. I'll let you know what happens.

GlidingAbove, Congrats on choosing such a challenging project. Rush is, in my oppinion, one of the few great musical acts of our time. Some of my favorite years were spent in a Rush tribute band. I'd love to hear a recording after you get it together. Check out my Rush website at www.designvortex.com/greenman/rush

I checked out your site. Very cool! Nice job.
It'll be a little while until we're ready to record anything but when we are I'll see what I can do. I'm hoping in about two months or so we'll be ready to play somewhere. Should be an interesting ride at least.

An update - we finally decided on a name! We picked Solar Federation, which should sound familiar to anyone that knows the 2112 album. But, now the bad news...
I just found out today that our bass player is leaving to play in the Van Halen tribute band I mentioned earlier. Turns out it actually came together in the end, and since they agreed to let his guitar player in his other band play, he's going to do that instead. So, now we have to find another Geddy Lee out there somewhere. Argh! Oh well. Hopefully it's just a little bump in the road. I'll let you know what happens.

Well, as luck would have it, a bass player that I was trying to get together with a few months ago but never did sent me an e-mail last week to see what I was doing. I had no idea if he was into Rush at all, so I asked him if he wanted to try out next week. To my surprise, he said he'd loved to do it! So we'll see what happens Monday night. Keep your fingers crossed.

Heheh...I must beg to differ. We live in the same town, remember? I'd say either you are just extremely lucky, or I'm extremely out of touch. Could be a bit o' both. ;D

During the five years I've lived here, I've been to several places with open stages and answered a lot of classified ads, so I guess that's a big part of it. Unfortunately, you get some bad with the good, but those haven't been that many.

Three times a charm? Well, let's hope so! Vince, the new bass player, came out last night and practiced with us and liked what he heard. So, we're back on track. Our website is now online! Nothing there but a "coming soon" page, but it's up and running: www.solarfederation.netOnce we're almost ready to start playing out, I'll update it with a legitimate page. Stay tuned.

Our site is now (somewhat) functional, with a guestbook and a few links. Check it out if you like, leave song requests, praise for the band, donations, whatever ;D
We'll probably have the full version up and running in about a month, once we're ready to play out. At least we hope!
